foam rubber mattress |
Save yourself money by making your own foam rubber needs. The process is quick and easy.
Solid edging strip is cemented to end of core stock lo conceal holes; strip material comes in rolls.
FOAM RUBBER is clean, soft, sanitary, easy to work with, and holds its shape indefinitely. It does away with the need for springs and the skill required for tying them- By using foam rubber, a novice can turn out a professional job in a minimum of time.
Foam rubber is available in many standard sizes and thicknesses of cored stock, ranging from l1/2-inch to 31/4-inch thicknesses, plus a special Day Bed Cushioning which comes in 41/2-inch thickness.
For a junior bed, usually for children up to ten years old, a foam rubber pad of 41/2x 36x76 inches would be the nearest standard size available. This unit can be reduced in length to 62 inches, which is the usual junior bed dimension. The remaining 14 inches could be saved until the child reaches the age of 12 or so, when the cushion could be reopened and the reserve slab attached with rubber cement.
The dimensions of a crib mattress is 21/2x28x52 inches. This is available in core stock for this dimension. The 21/2-inch thickness is designed to be used on top of a spring frame. Should the mattress be used on a plywood slab or webbing, it is desirable to add on a 1-inch thickness of flat stock of the same dimension; this is glued onto the core surface. Of course, when using core stock the edges must be concealed with 1/2-inch flat stock strips which are available. The cradle project, because of the variations of dimensions, would require that 21/2-inch core stock would have to be bought to the size needed. The same information that applies to the crib applies also to the cradle.
For the crib mattress shown here, Koy-lon foam rubber was used, together with Koylon rubber cement. A removable, plastic, zippered mattress cover was used for the crib mattress; the cost of the cover was $1.98. The cost of foam rubber was approximately $18, which brings the cost of this lifetime mattress to $20.
To make a foam rubber seat or couch cushions, the dimensions of the foam rubber should be 3/4 inch longer and wider than the seat cushion it is to fit into. This is important in order to accomplish a snug, neat, trim cover fit. For cushions larger than 24x24 inches, increase this addition by 1/4 inch for every 12 inches.
When fitting the cover over the foam rubber cushion, turn the cover inside out and apply some rubber cement to the top front edge of the foam cushion and to the corresponding inside edge of the cover. Allow the cement to dry, then bring the two cemented surfaces together, making sure that the cover seam is perfectly aligned with the foam rubber edge, and follow through by sliding the rest of the cover over the cushion in sock fashion. The purpose of cementing the top front edge of the cover to the foam rubber cushion is to hold the cover in place and prevent it from creeping. Complete the job by sewing up the open seam in the cover by hand. •
